Dempsey Updates on Eric Dane's Brave ALS Battle

Patrick Dempsey, known to "Grey's Anatomy" fans as Derek Shepherd, has offered a poignant update on his former co-star, Eric Dane, who is bravely navigating his battle with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). Dane, who portrayed Mark Sloan, affectionately nicknamed "McSteamy," alongside Dempsey's "McDreamy," has been facing the progressive neurodegenerative disease.
In a recent interview, Dempsey shared that he remains in regular contact with Dane. "I spoke to him a few weeks ago," Dempsey revealed, mentioning his efforts to secure a role for Dane in his new Fox series, "Memory of a Killer." Unfortunately, the advanced stage of Dane's illness presented insurmountable challenges. "We were trying to get him in ['Killer'], but unfortunately, the progression of his disease made it virtually impossible," Dempsey explained. He did, however, note Dane's recent work in Toronto on what appeared to be another medical drama, highlighting his continued engagement in the industry.
This recent acting endeavor for Dane was a guest appearance on "Brilliant Minds" in November. He took on the role of a firefighter also contending with ALS, a condition also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. This illness is characterized by the gradual breakdown of nerve cells in both the spinal cord and the brain, and currently, there is no known cure. The impact of Dane's performance was profound, with series creator Michael Grassi recounting an extraordinary scene where Dane received a prolonged standing ovation for its authenticity and emotional depth. "I have never seen this happen in my entire career," Grassi commented, emphasizing the "beautiful and so honest and so real" nature of Dane's portrayal.
Dempsey expressed his admiration for Dane's resilience. "It's very hard for him, but I do try to stay in touch and see how he's doing," Dempsey stated. He further described Dane as "incredibly courageous in the face of this horrible disease" and a "wonderful human being" possessing a "great sense of humor" and remarkable intelligence. The deep bond forged on the set of "Grey's Anatomy" is evident in Dempsey's heartfelt words. "I've always enjoyed working and being around Eric. It's heartbreaking. It really is," Dempsey admitted, extending his sympathy to Dane and his family. He acknowledged the devastating speed at which the disease affects the body but lauded Dane for bringing "a lot of light" to the situation and utilizing his public profile for positive awareness.
Since disclosing his diagnosis in April, Dane has been a vocal advocate for raising awareness about ALS. In June, he traveled to Washington, D.C., to engage with U.S. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. regarding proposed changes to health insurance prior authorization processes. His proactive approach underscores his commitment to making a difference while facing his own significant health challenge. Dempsey concluded by wishing Dane "the best," underscoring the enduring respect and affection between the former co-stars.
