AI Giants Pivot to Enterprise Growth

AI powerhouses OpenAI and Anthropic are strategically targeting the business sector this year, aiming to capture a larger slice of revenue, user base, and market dominance.

During separate discussions at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, on Wednesday, both OpenAI CFO Sarah Friar and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei underscored the critical role of enterprise clients in their financial growth.

Friar noted that enterprise clients currently represent approximately 40% of OpenAI's revenue, a figure she anticipates will rise to nearly 50% by year's end. The company revealed in November that its technology is utilized by over a million businesses globally. Founded as a non-profit AI research lab in 2015, OpenAI has seen its valuation skyrocket to $500 billion, particularly following the successful introduction of its ChatGPT chatbot in 2022. Friar emphasized their current robust financial standing and their future focus on delivering value to both consumers and enterprises, while also addressing the evolving capabilities of AI.

Conversely, Amodei clarified that while Anthropic does have consumer offerings, they are not the primary focus for the company. He stated that enterprises constitute about 80% of Anthropic's business, with consumers making up the remaining 20%. Amodei explained that Anthropic's emphasis on enterprises stems partly from their capacity to provide a more consistent and dependable income stream. He also highlighted that Anthropic's foundational commitment to AI safety and reliability aligns well with the needs and expectations of business clients, creating a strong synergy. As of September, Anthropic had expanded its business customer base to over 300,000, a significant jump from fewer than 1,000 clients just two years prior. Anthropic, established in 2021 by former OpenAI employees and researchers, has achieved a valuation of $350 billion.
